 The drought continues... straight

from a T.V.A. press release.(15 April 08)

Update on Drought Conditions
For the week ending April 11, there was an average of 1.11 inches of rainfall recorded in the Tennessee Valley. Runoff was 1.09 inches. (Note: All rainfall and runoff data is of midnight April 10.)

The forecast as of April 11 indicated fair and dry conditions this week, with totals of less than 0.5 inch. Rainfall levels are still below normal. TVA estimates that, on average, 4 to 6 inches of rain are needed over the next five weeks to fill the tributary reservoirs to summer pool levels.

Below is updated information as of April 11 on the condition of the reservoir system.

  • For the calendar year-to-date (Jan. 1-April 10), the Valley had received a total of 12.94 inches of rainfall and 7.65 inches of runoff. Rainfall for the calendar year-to-date is 82 percent of normal. Hydro production for the calendar year-to-date is 55 percent of normal.
  • Pool levels at Cherokee, Douglas, Chatuge, Nottely, Hiwassee, Blue Ridge, Norris, Tims Ford and Fontana are above their winter flood-guide levels and forecast to remain above their respective flood-guide levels this week. South Holston and Watauga are below their winter flood-guide levels (8.6 feet and 5.1 feet, respectively) and as of April 11 were forecast to increase an average of 1 foot over the following week. Elevations along the main river are above winter operating levels.

Drought conditions still exist throughout the Valley. TVA will schedule flows through the system to fill tributary projects while meeting downstream flow requirements, maintaining water quality, protecting aquatic habitat and providing for commercial navigation.

  • Pool levels at Cherokee, Douglas, Chatuge, Nottely, Hiwassee, Blue Ridge and Fontana are above their respective flood-guide levels. Levels at the other tributary projects are expected to rise an average of about 2.0 feet this week. South Holston and Watauga are below their flood-guide levels (8.0 feet and 6.4 feet, respectively) and are forecast to remain well below these levels. Elevations along the main river are slightly above winter operating levels.

Drought conditions still exist throughout the Valley. TVA will continue to operate the tributary and main river reservoirs with minimum flows to maintain water quality, protect aquatic habitat and provide for commercial navigation.
