Update on Drought
Conditions
For the week ending
April 11, there was an
average of 1.11 inches
of rainfall recorded in
the Tennessee Valley.
Runoff was 1.09 inches.
(Note:
All rainfall and runoff
data is of midnight
April 10.)
The forecast as of
April 11 indicated fair
and dry conditions this
week, with totals of
less than 0.5 inch.
Rainfall levels are
still below normal. TVA
estimates that, on
average, 4 to 6 inches
of rain are needed over
the next five weeks to
fill the tributary
reservoirs to summer
pool levels.
Below is updated
information as of
April 11 on the
condition of the
reservoir system.

For the calendar
year-to-date
(Jan. 1-April 10),
the Valley had
received a total of
12.94 inches of
rainfall and 7.65
inches of runoff.
Rainfall for the
calendar
year-to-date is
82 percent of
normal. Hydro
production for the
calendar
year-to-date is
55 percent of
normal.

Pool levels at
Cherokee, Douglas,
Chatuge, Nottely,
Hiwassee, Blue
Ridge, Norris, Tims
Ford and Fontana are
above their winter
flood-guide levels
and forecast to
remain above their
respective
flood-guide levels
this week. South
Holston and Watauga
are below their
winter flood-guide
levels (8.6 feet and
5.1 feet,
respectively) and as
of April 11 were
forecast to increase
an average of 1 foot
over the following
week. Elevations
along the main river
are above winter
operating levels.
Drought conditions still
exist throughout the
Valley. TVA will
schedule flows through
the system to fill
tributary projects while
meeting downstream flow
requirements,
maintaining water
quality, protecting
aquatic habitat and
providing for commercial
navigation.

Pool levels at Cherokee,
Douglas, Chatuge,
Nottely, Hiwassee, Blue
Ridge and Fontana are
above their respective
flood-guide levels.
Levels at the other
tributary projects are
expected to rise an
average of about
2.0 feet this week.
South Holston and
Watauga are below their
flood-guide levels
(8.0 feet and 6.4 feet,
respectively) and are
forecast to remain well
below these levels.
Elevations along the
main river are slightly
above winter operating
levels.
Drought conditions still
exist throughout the Valley.
TVA will continue to operate
the tributary and main river
reservoirs with minimum
flows to maintain water
quality, protect aquatic
habitat and provide for
commercial navigation. |
